Cosmetology Grads in Demand

If you choose a career in hair, it is very likely that you will be in demand. How do we know? Consider these facts:
- Even as the economy lost jobs in 2002, 2003 and 2008, the salon industry added jobs. 1
- Employment in the cosmetology industry is expected to grow by 20% between 2008 and 2018. 2
- Cosmetology is the sixth largest growing field. 3
When you think about your career, it’s important to think long term. Cosmetology is one of the few fields that have provided consistent stability and job security. Consider the following:

Cosmetology is virtually recession proof.
While clients might want to spend less, or get their hair cut less often, they still need haircuts. How many of your friends make pedicures, manicures and haircuts a priority? Even if they can’t afford other luxuries, they find a way to pay for hair styling, cutting and coloring.
You can go anywhere
As a cosmetologist, you can take your career in any direction you choose. That might mean a high-end salon on board a cruise ship and traveling to exotic places. You might want to serve a local retirement community with on-site styling services. Or open up your own salon some day and put all your ideas and talents to work. Once you check for licensure reciprocity, you’ll know what’s required to practice in another state—if you want to move.
Flexible part-time schedules
Flexible part-time schedules mean work-life balance. If you have other interests or a family, cosmetology allows you to schedule work around your other priorities.
